Inherit the Wind – Fall 2005
By Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee
November 3-6, 2005 in SMCC Performance Hall
Based on the Scopes Monkey trial of 1925, in which the idea of teaching evolution theory in our schools was challenged, Inherit the Wind touches on themes still relevant in our society today: battles over religion, science, human rights, academic freedom, and values. As America currently finds itself in the midst of controversies such as the political debate over the war in Iraq, the growing support for the theory of Intelligent Design, and the concerns surrounding same-sex marriage, revisiting Inherit the Wind reminds us of the value of multiple perspectives and the importance of free thought in order for society to progress and adapt to changing conditions.
