The Cougars hosted #9 Southern Nevada for two games on Saturday. CSN was in the NJCAA World Series a year ago so it would be a good early test for South.
Game 1 saw the Cougars put up 4 runs in the 1st inning off Sophomore Isaiah Blaylock who is committed to Houston. South Mountain would get six hits in 3 innings off Blaylock. Sophomore Alonso Bibiano had a big two RBI single in the first and Carson Burton had 3 hits in the game. Sophomore Ryan Saltonstall who is committed to Central Florida went 4 strong innings only giving up two hits and had two strikeouts to get the win as the Cougars would take game one 5-0. Freshman Genner Cervantes gave three shutout innings out of the bullpen to secure the win.
Game 2 pitched Freshman Matt Mitchell against Sophomore Conner Deeds. The Cougars would find themselves down 2-1 after one inning. Both pitchers settled in and it would be a pitchers duel for six innings. South plated a run in the 5th to tie the game at 2. South Mountain would add 2 more in the 7th and hold on for the win 4-3. Sophomore Conner Deeds went 6 innings and had 7 strikeouts before giving way to Freshman Michael Davis who would get the win on the mound. Tallon Thomason would close it out in the 9th for his fourth save of the year. Sophomore Blake Porter had a hit and an RBI as did Freshman Toren Craig.
South Mountain improves to (5-4) on the season and travels to play Phoenix on Tuesday at 3pm.
