The 2012-13 SMCC Softball team was recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as having the 3rd best team grade point average in the country. SMCC softball ranked number 3, out of all two-year colleges with a team GPA of 3.421.
South Mountain CC climbed to #19 in the NJCAA Division 1 Baseball poll released today. The Cougars have won four of their last six ACCAC games and are in a tie for the top spot in the conference with Central Arizona College.
On Tuesday, the Cougars opened the week with a game at Central Arizona College in a match-up of the top two teams in the ACCAC. South Mountain got out to an early 1-0 lead only to see the Vaqueros score three runs in both the 5th and 7th innings and win by the score of 6-1.
During Spring Break week, the Cougars hosted a 19-team tournament with games going on all day for six days. On Tuesday, South Mountain defeated Western Nebraska CC by the score of 9-0. The Tuesday game marked the 4th consecutive shutout thrown by the Cougar pitching staff.
The Cougars started the week on Tuesday with a double-header in Thatcher against Eastern Arizona College. In the first game, Eastern held a 5-3 lead heading into the final inning, but South Mountain rallied for two runs to send the game into extra innings.
On Tuesday, the Cougars were facing a 3-0 deficit headed to the bottom of the 6th innings, but scored nine runs in the next three innings to defeat the Pumas 9-3 at South Mountain.
