Back to Back Defending NJCAA National Champion South Mountain Men’s Golf opened the season this past weekend at Dobson Ranch hosted by Mesa CC. The Cougars would finish 1st place and Ryan Bailey would take the individual win as well.
Golf celebrated National Championships from 2013,2015 and 2016 on Saturday during halftime of the Basketball game with their ring ceremony.
South Mountain has won 5 of the last 7 NJCAA D2 National Championships.
In 2013 South won the team championship by 32 strokes.
After trailing by 1 shot, halfway through the Tournament, South Mountain turned up the pressure and won the Championship by 20 shots. Coach Walker’s team showed amazing resilience the final two days and finished the Tournament as the only team under par.
Today’s conditions were a little more difficult for the golfers, but the top two teams remain in a tight race for the National Title. The Cougars fell one stroke behind Tyler Junior College with a two day total of 574, while the Apaches have posted a 573.
South Mountain will begin competition on Tuesday morning, as the number 1 ranked Junior College team in the country.
Winning by a total of 65 shots over the second place team. South Mountain’s five participants finished #1 through #5 in the final standings. Sophomore Jake DeForest won the tournament, while sophomores Ryan Douglass and Connor Klein finished tied for 2nd.
