South Mountain Community College Men’s Golf Team Claims 2019 National Championship

The South Mountain Community College men’s golf team capped a remarkable 2019 season that saw the Cougars win all 12 tournaments in which they competed by claiming a National Championship at Swan Lake Golf Resort in Plymouth, IN on May 24. This marks the seventh time the program has won a national title since 2004. Returning NJCAA champion and SMCC sophomore Leon D’Souza claimed the individual championship for a second straight year – the first time an individual has repeated as champion since 1993.

In a 4-day tournament that saw the team in second place by six strokes after Round Two, the Cougars dominated the second half, including posting a tournament-record matching 279 team score in the final round to claim the championship by 19 strokes.

With D’Souza leading the field, teammate Brandon Meyer finished strong in fourth while Jonathan Walters finished eighth. All three were named First Team All-American. Jeffrey Miller and Jacob Smith rounded out the team, and finished the season as All-American Honorable Mention

All five players finished in the Top 25 in the tournament.

D’Souza and Meyer are also finalists for the 2019 Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year Award.
