Brittney Matta begins her first season as the Head Softball Coach for SMCC. Brittney was born and raised in Northern California and turned softball into one of her favorite lifetime hobbies. Brittney played club ball in Sacramento, California and decided to play college softball in Arizona at Arizona State. In 2006, Brittney was the only walk-on player to make the roster for Coach Clint Myers. After one red-shirt year at ASU, she found herself playing with the nation’s elite. In 2008, Coach Myers took the Sun Devils to OKC where they won the school’s first National Championship. Brittney became an undergraduate assistant for the team in 2009 after an injury set her back. She worked hand-in-hand with the offense day in and day out. She found her passion for the game in coaching. Two years later ASU took other National Title winning the 2011 Women’s College World Series. Even though the first win was special, Brittney holds the 2011 National Championship dear to her heart. After starting her master's degree in Higher and Post Secondary Education, Brittney became the head coach at Highland High School in Gilbert, AZ. Her first year coaching she took her team into the playoffs. In 2017, Brittney became an assistant coach at Mesa Community College under head coach Grady Moorhead. She helped take MCC to the Division Finals and were one win away from the Junior College World Series. Brittney joins the South Mountain Cougars Athletics Staff with pride and excitement. She hopes to contend with the nations top Juco teams and individually help each player achieve greatness on and off the field.
