Academic Interests

I am interested in developmental strategies that foster student success and retention, especially in mathematics. I am also interested in devising creative ways to get students through non-credit math classes quickly, while having them retain what they learn. Since many developmental students also suffer from math anxiety, I focus on getting them comfortable in class quickly so that they are willing to ask questions and participate in conversations. I put all of my class material online in MyMathLab, MathAS or Canvas so it is accessible to students anytime and anywhere. My classes are a mix of formal presentation, interactive discussion and student led activities. I try to present material in more than one way, algebraically as well as graphically, for example. Various kinds of technology are helpful in doing this, as long as students are given the time to experiment with these tools. I strive to be available to students not only during office hours but provide support via email as well. I believe that ensuring that students succeed in their first math class is a major goal of teaching developmental classes. That first positive experience is absolutely critical to students' continued success in math.
