Research Interests: My research has focused on building intelligent machines that utilize artificial neural networks, (ANN). ANNs are constructed of many highly-interconnected simple processing units, similar to neurons. Currently, computers are great and doing numerical calculations very fast, but are not very good at doing tasks that our brains perform easily, such as recognizing faces, or learning from past mistakes. This is because computers perform sequential operations through fixed connections, while our brains have trillions of highly interconnected neurons that allow it to process information through parallel paths, and modify the synapses between neurons as it learns. (Ph.D. thesis: “Computing with Spiking Neurons.”) Teaching Experience: South Mountain Community College, (SMCC). August, 2000 – present. Western International University, (WIU). November, 1999 – July, 2000. Estrella Mountain Community College, (EMCC). January, 2000 – May, 2000. Electrical Engineering Department at Indiana University – Purdue University at Indianapolis, (IUPUI). January, 1997 – May, 1999. Personal Information: Married since 1990 to Dr. Karen Frank, who is a physician of internal medicine. Three Daughters: Kristen (10/6/94), Courtney (12/28/99) and Caitlin (5/3/02).
