What is TRiO?
Federal TRiO Programs (TRiO) are federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRiO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to postbaccalaureate programs. These programs are funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965. South Mountain Community College (SMCC) houses two of TRiOs eight programs, STEP (Student Support Services) and Upward Bound.
More than 1,000 U.S. colleges, universities, community colleges, and agencies offer TRIO Programs. TRIO funds are distributed to institutions through competitive grants in five year cycles. For more information about the TRIO Programs, please click here.
