New Dean of Academic Innovation to Join SMCC in July

South Mountain Community College is excited to announce that Bernice Portervint has accepted the position of Dean of Academic Innovation, and will begin work in this role on July 15, 2019.

As Dean, Bernice will work to support the key priorities and critical goals identified in the academic master plan. She will pursue new and enhanced programs to meet the needs of our diverse student population, including implementing innovative programs and expanding workforce development and Career and Technical Education opportunities. The dean will also serve as a liaison to faculty and administration to create a cohesive, collaborative and rewarding team environment.

Most recently, Bernice has been serving as the Dean of Academic and Distance Learning at Northwest Indian College (NWIC) in Bellingham, WA, and was responsible for providing leadership, oversight and support of the academic, vocational and distance learning programs as well as developing new programs and extended sites. In addition, she oversaw faculty professional development and the academic budget. She also has extensive work with program development and institutional assessment, as well as managing grants.

“The Phoenix Metro area is growing at an incredible rate, and SMCC stands ready to respond to new demands with innovative programs and services,” said Dr. Clyne Namuo, SMCC’s Vice President of Learning. “I believe Bernice will be an incredible asset in leading the division, and working collaboratively both internally and externally as we explore new ways to serve the south Phoenix community.”
