South Mountain Community College’s (SMCC) Bachelor of Science in Behavioral Sciences program has received approval from the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners (AzBBHE) for the Licensed Addiction Counselor Technician (LACT). This means students who began the bachelor’s degree program in Fall 2023 or later and complete the approved coursework will meet the educational requirements for the LACT licensure.
“This accomplishment underscores South Mountain’s commitment to aligning education with industry standards and preparing students for impactful careers,” said Dr. Steven R. Gonzales, Maricopa Community Colleges Chancellor. “AzBBHE approval is another way we solidify our program's credibility, as rigorous state curriculum, ethical, and professional standards must be met. This approval would not have been possible without the efforts of our dedicated faculty and staff.”
An entry-level state licensure in Arizona and regulated by the AzBBHE, the LACT credential allows professionals to work under the supervision of a licensed addiction counselor to gain hands-on experience and develop essential skills to support individuals struggling with substance use disorders. Additionally, the license serves as a pathway to advanced credentials, such as a Licensed Associate Substance Abuse Counselor (LASAC) or Licensed Independent Substance Abuse Counselor (LISAC).
With a growing shortage of addiction counselors, the demand for qualified professionals is on the rise. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, an estimated 48,900 openings for substance abuse, behavioral disorder, and mental health counselors are projected annually over the next decade, driven primarily by workforce transitions and retirements. Employment in this field is expected to grow 19% from 2023 to 2033, significantly faster than the average for all occupations. Obtaining the LACT license enhances students' employability while addressing the growing demand for skilled professionals in the behavioral health sector.
“The LACT is a win-win for both employers and our students,” said Veronica Hipolito, SMCC President. “Employers benefit from a more qualified workforce, and our students can pursue higher-salary positions. By earning the LACT approval, SMCC underscores its commitment to aligning our educational offerings with industry standards in order to prepare students for meaningful and impactful careers.”
SMCC’s bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Sciences provides students with advanced knowledge and skills to address behavioral health challenges. Students learn evidence-based practices, ethical frameworks, and interdisciplinary collaboration to meet the various needs of individuals and families facing mental health conditions, addiction issues, trauma, and developmental disabilities. The program prepares graduates for multiple professional certifications, including the Registered Behavior Technician and Licensed Addiction Counselor Technician credentials.
This spring, SMCC celebrated 35 graduates of the program. Last year, the college made history by becoming one of the first community colleges in the state to confer bachelor’s degrees. Today, the bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Sciences has nearly 1,000 students enrolled.
