The Annual South Mountain Community College Food and Turkey Drive saw hundreds of community members line up early on campus to receive a free turkey along with other food items. This year the college partnered with former NFL player and local Phoenix resident Markus Wheaton, whose efforts allowed almost 500 free turkeys and other food items to be given out to families in need.
Wheaton, a Phoenix native who played five seasons in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles, has been providing Thanksgiving meals, encouragement and support to families across the Phoenix community in what began as a personal mission rooted in his upbringing.
“I grew up in this community - this neighborhood shaped me, and giving back has always been personal,” said Wheaton. “It’s powerful to see everyone come together for a good cause.”
This year, the SMCC Food and Turkey Drive is also being supported by TMT Law Firm and its charitable arm, the Champions for Justice Foundation, who are stepping in as significant sponsors to help expand the event and serve even more families.
Additionally, St. Mary’s Food Bank has been a partner with the college for years, and continues to help support the college’s outreach efforts to the community by providing additional food and essentials for families in need. This annual event at the college has provided hundreds of free turkeys, food and other essentials to the community at no cost.
Volunteers included SMCC employees and students who worked to make this a spectacular event dedicated to community, connection and compassion.
