At South Mountain Community College (SMCC), the Care and Conduct Office is committed to fostering a safe, respectful, and supportive campus environment. Through the CARE (Campus Assessment, Response, and Evaluation) Team and student conduct processes, we provide early intervention, resources, and accountability to help students succeed.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s):
A CARE (Campus Assessment, Response, and Evaluation) or Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) report allows students, faculty, and staff to share concerns about a student’s well-being or behavior. Reports are reviewed by a multidisciplinary team to determine appropriate outreach and support.
Submit a report if a student is:
- Showing signs of emotional distress
- Exhibiting concerning or disruptive behavior
- Struggling with basic needs
- Causing concern for their own or others’ safety
- The CARE Team reviews the report
- A staff member may reach out to the student
- Resources and support are offered
- Follow-up may occur
Information is handled in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and shared only with appropriate college officials. Privacy is respected, though anonymity cannot be guaranteed in all cases.
Yes. Students are encouraged to seek support. Self-referrals are welcomed and treated with care
Students may be connected to:
- Counseling Services
- Disability Resources and Services (DRS)
- SMCC Basic Needs (food pantry, emergency assistance)
- Academic advising and tutoring
- Community resources
Faculty set attendance expectations in their syllabus. However:
- Students with medical or disability-related needs should connect with DRS
- Students are not required to disclose detailed medical information to faculty
- The Care and Conduct Office can assist in extenuating circumstances
- The Care and Conduct Office reviews the report
- The student is notified and allowed to respond
- Outcomes may include educational interventions, warnings, or other actions
