The Maricopa County Community College District Governing Board mourns the passing of former Board President Alfredo Gutierrez, a devoted public servant and lifelong advocate for educational access, civic engagement, and community well-being.
Mr. Gutierrez served as President of the Governing Board beginning in 2014, where he led with conviction and courage. During his tenure, he championed initiatives that expanded student pathways, streamlined degree completion, and worked to ensure broader access to in-state tuition for students.
A former Arizona State Senate Majority Leader, Mr. Gutierrez played a critical role in establishing South Mountain Community College, helping fulfill a long-standing need for educational opportunity in South Phoenix. His dedication to expanding access in education was deeply rooted in his own life experience and reflected in his tireless advocacy.
His influence extended far beyond the Boardroom. Mr. Gutierrez’s legacy includes founding long-standing community organizations such as Chicanos Por La Causa and Valle del Sol, alongside a lifetime committed to promoting equality, opportunity, and civic engagement.
SMCC expresses its deepest condolences to Mr. Gutierrez’s family and the many communities he served. His contributions to Maricopa Community Colleges and the state of Arizona will continue to inspire generations to come.
