SMCC Black Student Union Celebrates the Arts with Community Talent Showcase

The South Mountain Community College Black Student Union in collaboration with the AZ Talking Drum Performance Studio Network presented the “Valley of Stars Community Talent Showcase” on November 21 at the SMCC Performing Arts Center.

SMCC BSU worked with AZ Talking Drum Performance Studio Network to invite SMCC students and the community to show off their performances in an opportunity to platform local talent. People came out to the rehearsals to sign up as solo, duo, and group acts before taking the stage on show night. SMCC Black Student Union Celebrates the Arts with Community Talent Showcase

An audience of about 100 people filled the performance hall where 15 acts highlighted everything from dancing and singing, to film and poetry. The event brought the community together for a night filled with celebration of the arts and culture, creating a camaraderie for all ages.

“We learned so much about the process and things that go into running and having a smooth and successful talent showcase. It was a great way to get BSU involved with our local community and to create space for cultural recognition and celebration in an inclusive manner,” said Azra Mahmood, SMCC Faculty and BSU Co-Advisor.

A special thank you to SMCC Theatre Arts Program Director Mario Mendoza and SMCC Tech Project Manager Rob Duggan for their assistance in the production of the successful show and overall experience for the BSU club.
