South Mountain Community College is set to host The Phoenix Symphony Ensemble, Arizona’s largest professional performing arts group, for a special performance on February 18, which has been a longstanding tradition for the last 15 years.

The relationship between SMCC and The Phoenix Symphony was established through a collaboration with the Maricopa County Community College District Honors Program, who share the goal of bringing high-quality cultural and educational experiences directly to the college campuses for students and the community to enjoy.

This lasting connection has been of great value to SMCC as it has provided enriching opportunities for students to engage with the arts and learn from professional musicians that have expertise in a variety of instruments including the violin, cello, bass, flute, clarinet, horn and more.

“Hosting The Phoenix Symphony represents opportunity. It creates access to world-class music for our students, many of whom may not otherwise attend a professional symphony performance. It also serves our broader community, as these events are free and open to the public, and they offer our faculty and staff a chance to experience the arts together on campus,” said Jennifer Avila, SMCC’s Honors Program Director.

These concerts also represent inclusivity as it continues to build the SMCC community by bringing all people together for a shared experience and connecting them through the music.

“What is often seen as a luxury or exclusive experience becomes something our students and community can experience right here on campus. Bringing the Symphony to South Mountain not only creates a special moment filled with music, it also becomes a space where people from all backgrounds can come together, connect, and share in the power of live performance. It’s something that our Honors Department looks forward to every year,” said Elizabeth Villagomez, SMCC’s Honors Program Assistant.

The community is invited to experience the sounds of The Phoenix Symphony at the February 18 performance in SMCC’s Performing Arts Center.
