    3. Challenging Student Behaviors

In online learning environments, just as in face-to-face classrooms, students may occasionally exhibit behaviors that disrupt learning, communication, or community. These can include inappropriate language, disengagement, repeated late submissions, or failure to adhere to netiquette expectations.

As instructors, it is important to approach these situations with clarity, consistency, and care. Establishing clear behavioral expectations early—through your syllabus, announcements, and discussion guidelines—can prevent many issues before they arise. When challenges do occur, addressing them promptly and respectfully helps maintain a safe and productive learning environment for all.

Instructors are encouraged to:

  • Refer to and enforce course and college netiquette policies
  • Document and respond to concerns professionally and privately
  • Use Canvas inbox, conferencing tools, or success coaching referrals to re-engage students
  • Seek support from your division chair, student conduct office, or counseling services when needed

Online classrooms are shared learning spaces. By upholding expectations and responding with empathy, we model the respectful, inclusive, and engaged communication we hope to inspire in our students.

  1. Issues with conduct
    1. If you notice issues with conduct, you can submit an Early Alert report.
  2. Bot or fake students
    1. If you notice minimal or suspicious engagement, such as not logging in beyond enrollment or the very first class, overly generic discussion posts, no real assignment submissions, report your concerns to the Dean of enrollment services immediately.
