What Does an Academic Advisor Do?

Academic advisors are college staff members who are here to help you understand your degree or certificate requirements and support you throughout your college journey.

We work with you to create a plan so you can stay on track to graduate and, if you choose, transfer to another college or university in the future.

Think of college like a road trip:

  • You are the driver — this is your education and your future.
  • Your academic advisor is your GPS or navigator — we help you understand the route, explain your options, and help you avoid wrong turns or delays.
     

Your advisor can help you: 

  • Choose classes that fit your goals 
  • Understand college policies and requirements 
  • Explore majors and careers 
  • Connect with campus resources and support services 
  • Create a graduation or transfer plan 
     

Your advisor is here to guide and support you, but you are always in control of your decisions and your path. We’re excited to partner with you as you work toward your goals.

Graduation

Graduation is the official process of earning your degree or certificate and receiving your diploma from SMCC. This is different from Commencement, which is the ceremony celebrating your achievement. To receive your diploma, you must apply for graduation.

Opt for a scheduled appointment with the Advisor Assigned to your Field of Interest (FOI) if you need to: 
 

  • Review program requirements
  • Discuss change of major/degree pathway scenarios
  • Follow up visit after an official transcript evaluation for transfer credits
  • Plan out multiple semesters
  • Check your progress towards graduation
  • Discuss transfer options and available resources
  • Discuss academic concerns
  • Create a plan to get off of academic probation

     

Scheduled appointments provide you with focused time to meet with your academic advisor, have in-depth conversations, and receive consistent guidance throughout your academic journey.
