Good Stories Newsletter: SMCC Faculty and Staff Go Above and Beyond

When we asked for recommendations for Good Stories, many of you told us about SMCC colleagues who always go above and beyond for their students and community.

Here are some of the ways that faculty and staff have demonstrated that:

Jennifer Avila

Jennifer Avila, Reading Faculty, goes above and beyond for students. The kindness and care that she shows is amazing. She takes the time to personally walk them to resources they need and follows through to make sure they have been helped.”

Katie Cole in Counseling has been working to support a student who has encountered a lot of
obstacles, especially related to mental health each semester. The student struggles with motivation
but Katie offers reassurance by saying, “I’m holding hope for this student who cannot hold hope for themselves.”

Kari Locke

Kari Locke, Computer Science Faculty, helped her students compete in the ASU AI Challenge.
This was above and beyond her responsibilities and her students took second place in the competition!”

Mark Sanders

Mark Sanders, Student Services Analyst, goes above and beyond to show care to our students.
