The Maricopa Community Colleges’ veterans services offices act as liaisons with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Each program must be approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Students may be eligible to receive educational benefits if they are registered in courses that apply to the student’s approved program.
Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
Specific requirements for academic progress for financial aid recipients are applied differently than scholastic standards. In addition to scholastic standards, financial aid recipients are also subject to the following Standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress. Specific information is available at the college Office of Student Financial Aid.
Department of Veterans Affairs regulations require that all persons using any type of veteran educational assistance program be making satisfactory academic progress toward achievement of their educational objective (program of study). A student who does not meet the minimum standards (see above) will be placed on probation for a maximum of two (2) consecutive semesters. If satisfactory academic progress has not been demonstrated, veteran educational benefits will be terminated.
VBA Initiatives/ Choice Act
- VA will expand the Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship to include the spouses of service members who died in the line of duty.
- Programs of education at public colleges and universities may not be approved for Post-9/11 GI Bill® and Montgomery GI Bill® (MGIB) benefits if they do not charge all recently released Veterans and their family members instate tuition and fees.
VA requires that all transcripts, including military transcripts, are to be submitted to the college within two semesters. If after the second semester the transcripts are not received, the college must report the deficient transcript to the VA. The VA will then discontinue VA benefits until the required transcripts are received and evaluated by the college.
By Arizona statute, any failing grades from any Arizona university or community college that were received prior to military service will not be used to determine admission to the community college for the honorably discharged veterans with two years’ service in the Armed Forces of the United States.
A student in the Armed Forces or the Arizona National Guard who is called to active duty and assigned to a duty station, verifiable by a copy of the orders, will be allowed to withdraw and receive a 100% refund of tuition, provided courses have not been completed.
